The Hands, Heart, and Mind Behind Every Skein

Megan Mathison
Owner & Fiber Artist
Hello, I’m Megan Mathison, the dyer and creator of all things Knot & Bones.
I was born and raised in Indiana, where my love of art and color first began to take root. My childhood wasn’t always easy, growing up in a family where I often felt disconnected and unseen, I learned to lean into my imagination as both a refuge and a companion. My curious, creative nature gave me a lens through which to see the world differently, noticing beauty in places others might overlook.
One of my earliest artistic awakenings came from the “bookmobile”, a library on wheels that visited my elementary school. While other kids checked out brightly illustrated children’s stories, I gravitated toward the art books. I’ll never forget the first time I discovered Impressionism within those pages. Those dreamlike brushstrokes stirred something in me, the realization that art could be both realistic and deeply personal, translating not just what the eye sees but what the heart feels. That discovery shaped the way I approach all forms of creativity, and today, it’s the very heartbeat of my yarn dyeing.
Every skein I create tells a story. My colorways are often born out of moments of nostalgia and quiet observation, like the deep green of magnolia leaves against a pink-tinged evening sky on a walk with my dogs, or the way a passage in a book can conjure entire landscapes within the imagination. Whether inspired by nature, literature, or the simple beauty of the everyday, my yarns are designed to evoke emotion and memory, to make you pause and feel the wonder in the ordinary.
My journey of faith has also been an essential part of who I am. I wasn’t always a Christian, but finding my relationship with God has been life-changing, filling my life with meaning, hope and direction. That same sense of grace and joy threads its way into my work, reminding me daily that creativity itself is a gift meant to be shared.
At home, I’m blessed to share my life with my husband, Robert. He’s an elementary school science teacher and one of the most brilliant, creative, and supportive people I know. His encouragement pushes me to dream bigger and to grow not only as an artist but as a person. Together, we share our days with our two beloved pups: IO, our miniature schnauzer with the thrill of the hunt in his heart, and Watson, our goofy and affectionate standard poodle who is constantly up my butt(and biting it). They keep life lively, joyful, and full of loving companionship.
Hand-dyeing yarn is more than just a business for me, it’s a way to share pieces of my story, my faith, and my sense of wonder with others. My hope is that when you work with my yarn, you feel a spark of that same childlike curiosity and delight that first enchanted me in the pages of an Impressionist art book.
Thank you for being here, for supporting my work, and for letting me share this colorful journey with you.
